Delivery Codes on Grubhub - EVERYTHING You MUST Know!!

While PIN numbers are not unheard of in the gig economy and on platforms such as Doordash and UberEats, Grubhub started to require some customers to provide PIN numbers upon delivery!
This time it is a little… unusual how it is being conducted. On Grubhub they are known as Delivery Codes and have some noticeable differences compared to a normal Doordash and UberEats PIN Numbers.
So in this article, We are talking about:
EVERYTHING You MUST Know about Grubhub Delivery Codes
What they tell you vs how it ACTUALLY is
Everything in between!

I also want to be clear that everything we are going to go over is very market dependent, and what applies to me and my market may not apply to you.
What are Delivery Codes?
For certain orders, a two-digit code is supplied by the customer to confirm that the order has been dropped off. This helps prevent wrongful penalties and delivery mixups. Delivery codes can be used for both standard and contact-free orders.
This is not too different from the standard PIN that you would see for Doordash and UberEats, and while it does insure that the customer is who they say they are, they aren’t always treated that way though.
There have been many reports of people claiming they never received their orders even though we literally couldn’t move forward without their codes and PINs, and end up with contract violations anyway.
I haven’t heard of that story with Grubhub, but Doordash and UberEats are notorious for it. I am just saying, it is standard for the food delivery industry for a customer to give you a PIN or Code and you still get a violation for it.
Everything is an automation of sorts, not a person putting thought into what they are being told.

Standard Delivery
Meet the customer in person
Enter the code they give into the driver app
Once verified, hand off the order and complete the delivery
Contact-free Delivery
Text or call the customer for the code
Enter the code they give you into the driver app
Once verified, drop off the order and complete the delivery
Okay the first one makes sense, but what is the point of the contact-free delivery with delivery codes? The point is to ensure that the customer receives their order to protect customers from order theft, drivers from customer fraud and the platform from losing money.
So then why have the option for Contact-free delivery AND delivery code. Like pick one! It feels very counter-intuitive and will cause more fraud than actually help combat. I am just saying I don’t think they put thought into this.
I think they just saw that Doordash and UberEats were doing this and didn’t think about how it should be applied to the platform.
Just Two Digits?

Another weird part of this is that the code is just 2 digits, as opposed to 4. It also seems random too, because no one ever knows it ahead of time. Maybe they didn’t realize it because they didn’t know, or they didn’t even set it but that does seem like the point.
But then why allow it for Contact-free delivery? Was it an oversight, by design, or is it for optics of “having a system like this”?
Did they have the intention to verify and disarm fraud on the platform, or are they also using this as another excuse to deactivate good drivers on the platform?
This is one of the main reasons I say you should Diversify your Gig Portfolio and develop an exit strategy, if you can be deactivated for seemingly non-sense reasons you need all the financial protection you can get.
