I Got Scammed on DeliverThat, Here’s What Happened…

So one of the platforms I am actively working with is a company called DeliverThat and while I do not necessarily believe that they themselves scammed me, it did bring to light a consistent issue that has been taking place that is inhibiting their ability to grow as a company and drivers from being able to accept and complete orders on the platform.
This is an issue that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later because of how it affecting all parties involved, not to mention how drivers need to know about it to protect themselves financially.
So in this article, we are talking about:
How I got scammed on the DeliverThat Platform
What they are saying vs how it ACTUALLY is
Everything in between!

I also want to be clear that everything we are going to go over is very market dependent, and what applies to me and my market may not apply to you.
Understanding the Platform
As many of you know who have been following me for a while, DeliverThat is one of the many companies that ezCater sends their orders through, and yes this is a big source of their income, that doesn’t mean that is their ONLY source of income.

They also have been growing their direct partnerships for a long period of time now, and are even treated differently from an income perspective for us as opposed to the normal ezCater orders.
You see with direct partnership orders, the payout grows with the size of the order, not just the tip attached to it. It used to be this way with ezCater, but when they ended their tip pooling system, they changed how people got paid.
Not all partnerships are created equal though, because while some payout handsomely for a minimal amount of work, some end up playing stupid games or even paying absolute crap!
How I Got Scammed
One of the companies that DeliverThat is partnered with is Pollo Tropical, which is a Fast food chain that serves a lot of food for a REALLY affordable price, which is great for the person buying it but not the person delivering it.

That said, if you are going to accept orders from Pollo Tropical on DeliverThat, make sure they are worth your time especially since some of them are displaying payouts that are less than $10, and I am being generous with my choice of words.
Which brings me to the orders I received, one was an order paying almost $50 and one was paying over $70, which amounts to over $120. This is an amazing payout and I am always excited to take orders that have solid payouts of that nature.
Now the problem wasn’t so much with the orders themselves, in fact I couldn’t even complete them.
The first order ended up canceling on me 45 minutes before I had to pick up from them and the second kept changing all the information with the order multiple times until they ended up canceling it just under 3 hours beforehand. Which also means I only get one cancellation fee.
All of that for $25…
Why This is Worse Now
This isn’t so bad if you have these cancellations during the time when they still gave you full pay even if the partners screwed around with the order like this, but the reality is they screwed you out of full pay and they only pay out $25 when they cancel an order.
Also, when that happens at the last minute like this, a driver blocks out an hour or so of their day to make sure they get there on time, deliver it on time and even properly route themselves between orders.
Imagine rejecting other quality orders in the process of expecting to follow through on this one and they cancel it on you so you have to hope something comes in that best suits your timeframes.
I myself have had to accept orders that ended paying less and with more miles to my vehicle so I didn’t lose too much money from their choices.
Accountability in Partnerships
One of the challenges I am noticing here is how these restaurants are basically screwing with platforms as well as gig workers, because it is very likely that the customer didn’t just decide at the last minute to cancel, but the restaurant just gave the order to their own people.
It’s not like it is unheard of that a restaurant uses their own drivers or has one of their bartenders handle it so they can keep the high tips, but if you send it into the system and have a driver scheduled out for it, then let the driver have it and not screw with their money.
Also, if they keep changing the value of the order to best suit themselves, they are most likely trying to reduce the cut from the driver AND the platform by reporting the customer had less items.
This is one of the scams I found out Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza was conducting to where they would tell Doordash they only wanted me to deliver 3 pizzas and tried to hand me 30 pizzas, 30 wings and garlic knots.
I don’t remember the full story but if you want to learn more about that as well as 2 other scams that restaurants pull on us, I will leave a video talking all about that in the description, feel free to check it out!
How this Affects Bonus Programs on DeliverThat
One of the bonus programs on DeliverThat is one where you get extra pay for each of the orders that you complete each quarter, commonly referred to as the DeliveringMore Bonus, and while they made it harder for us to reach those heights, the point is that you can earn extra cash without having to lose money on each order.
This was a nice way to help committed drivers feel appreciated about their work on the platform, but not if you plan on completing those orders and they won’t give you the orders you need to reach those higher numbers because they keep getting canceled at the last minute.
It is one thing if it was ezCater because they are one of the many companies they outsource to, but Pollo Tropical is a direct partnership! Regardless, this is why it is vital to hold Pollo Tropical and other direct partners accountable.
The Importance of Diversifying Your Gig Portfolio
Like I said, this really affected my income on the days in which this took place, but that is why it is important to Diversify your Gig Portfolio. I was able to snag other orders but not because of DeliverThat, but SkipCart and one of my local DSP companies, TimetoEat SoFlo/Streetlions.
It was a little more effort and I had to complete other orders but it was vital for my income for the week.
Also make sure you develop an exit strategy, remember the gig economy is an income bridge to what would be a long term goal, and not the goal. This is why I started carrying a business card to build my own business. I don’t want to rely on a company that treats my income like that.
Also, it is important to note that you need to be a part of communities that help build each other up and talk about this stuff which is what I am doing with the Driven Wyld Discord Server.
