I Just Did The Weirdest Order On UberEats AND Got Tip Baited, Here's What Happened...

So as I am building my business, I am still doing my own gig worker to ensure I am staying on the cutting edge. That said, the other day I did a delivery for UberEats and the strangest thing happened and I don’t know how else to explain it… until I started typing it out.
As I was typing this page out, I started to piece together some thoughts in my mind about how UberEats truly works and how it would affect us.
So in this video, We are talking about:
Everything that took place during this order
What they were saying vs how it ACTUALLY is
Everything in between!

I also want to be clear that everything we are going to go over is very market dependent, and what applies to me and my market may not apply to you.
The Order Itself

So the other day after completing a delivery on Walmart Spark, I got an order on UberEats for Alberte’s Restaurant, which is a place I pick up from every now and then without issue. It didn’t surprise me that I got this order, it surprised me that the order I got was not a “full pick-up”.
You see, they marked this order as a large order. Which in the eyes of uber means I need to only pick up part of the order, and another driver would pick up the other half. This made NO SENSE TO ME!
I have registered my vehicle and bags, they know I have more than sufficient equipment to complete this order, so why do this? Maybe the order was really that big right? Nope, just one plastic bag’s worth of items… what nonsense.
The other half of the order was just 6 small bottles of soda. Not even like the 2 liter bottles, just the small 20 oz. bottles.
I head to my customer's location, drop off the order and explain the situation to him so he understands why he didn’t get the full order from me, and I left.
The Strangest Tip Bait

As I am working on a few things for my business and friends, I noticed something peculiar about the order I had just done. I was tip baited, but not in the standard way of tip baiting. In fact, I think that this almost feels like it was by design.
You see, normally when someone tip baits, it is either to a random number, or just a clear 0. It rarely resembles any kind of pattern. This time, I notice how the tip isn’t a full payout, it is literally half of what it was before.
Now this could be by customer design, sure, but what if it wasn’t? What if because the order was distributed to 2 drivers, they displayed the full payout to get the order delivered, and later on they split it between the 2 drivers, or didn’t split it at all and just lied about it?
Meaning they Tip-Fronted that the customer would have tipped more, and then dropped it later claiming the customer did it. The support teams wouldn’t know the difference so they would be committed to see that they don’t give me the full payout as well.

That said, I did call them about it, they gave me the same scripted answers, asked to speak to a supervisor and they gave me back the $4.33. I did say I was recording them on the line, and I did have my equipment ready to go, but I never pressed record… I’m an idiot.
Final Thoughts
It is interesting to see the different approaches that are being taken for fulfilling deliveries without increasing pay and making them more enticing to drivers, I will say this as well. I normally would not have approached this order under normal circumstances.
If they only showed me $7.87 as I was paid, and not $12.20, I would have declined. Some may argue that I should have declined anyway due to a just barely acceptable ratio, but I thought it was okay.
Regardless, if this was the customer, it was a dick move. Which is why you should always maintain a diverse gig portfolio and develop an exit strategy, because the gig economy is an income bridge to what would be a long term goal, not simply the goal.
