Skipcart Screwed Me on this ezCater order, here’s what happened…

So today I had a catering order on Skipcart and it revealed something about Skipcart that is absolutely disgusting and that is how they handle wrong address issues, which is going to lead to more disgusting behaviors by gig workers on the platform if it is not remedied.

In fact, it seems to be almost like they encourage it from how they handle it.

So in this article, We are talking about:

  • How this ezCater order went down on SkipCart

  • How Skipcart handled themselves vs How it ACTUALLY is in the greater gig economy

  • Everything in between!

I also want to be clear that everything we are going to go over is very market dependent, and what applies to me and my market may not apply to you.

The Order Itself

So I had an order planned on DeliverThat, and it was the best one I had in a while… only for it to be canceled. Once again proving that their direct contracts are not worth serving, since you won’t be able to keep your own orders.

We aren’t here to talk about that though, I was going to make this a business day but then I got a half way decent order on SkipCart, $30 and change for about 10 miles, not great but solid and these guys are pretty good about being on time.

That said, I got the order pretty quickly and got to the location in the GPS, low and behold the address brought me to the middle of the road in an intersection with on-and-off ramps to the I-95, not really an address to leave a catering order.

This was odd to say the least, but it did mean I would have to contact the customer and support teams. I gave the customer a call first, and it turns out she gave me a slightly wrong address, not west but east.

This was about 2 miles difference, so I contacted support to ask how they wanted to handle compensation for the change of address.

Dealing With Support

So as we all know, when dealing with Support we will inevitably be dealing with nonsense, but it is worse on Skipcart because you will have to deal with chat support no matter what, and they are known for being manipulative and scammy by nature.

Not to mention without phone support, they can just ignore you indefinitely and I have so many videos showing that.

That said, it isn’t like I had much choice here so I contacted them and got further documented proof that led to showing how much they scam people on a regular basis.

So I ask them how much I would be compensated for the change of address, which they wouldn’t tell me. They said they have to calculate the difference once I arrive… which is not true.

They have more than enough capacity to look it up themselves, they are just choosing not to so they can get the labor out of you sooner. They also said “the team is working on it” which implies this is a human decision.

I was in a time crunch because of a business call I needed to be a part of so I just drove it there and notified them that I got there and then asked how much it would be… $1.04.

They claimed because the order was “only 1.6 miles” more, but it also was an additional 15 minutes to get it done. So in reality, I would have saved time and money if I literally just left the food in the dirt where the address led me to.

This is also far less than other platforms where this has taken place, Doordash would tell me to leave it there or provide an extra half pay, DeliverThat would add a significant dollar amount and it only happened once. Skipcart only paying $1 would lead to fraud for sure.

This is the same issue I have had with Veho, where they don’t properly pay people for returns so therefore would lead to more packages stolen on their platform, which is something that has been rising ever since.

In fact, it would be irresponsible to allow them to treat us this way in the future. Regardless, I will never be accommodating to a customer again, clearly the company prefers if you just leave it there on the road and not think about how inaccurate the address is.

After all, you get what you pay for.

Also when I called them out on this, they said it was “the system’s” fault. Which is it? A human team deciding how it will work, or a system that can make those calculations ahead of time? The definition of malpractice and fraud.

Final Thoughts

This was just as much my fault as it is the customers, but honestly I think I will be further evidence for an upcoming lawsuit, after all retaliation of this nature would be more than enough that I can build a case.

Not to mention all of the other evidence I have been building for this type of fraud. I am getting sick and tired of gig workers being mistreated by these platforms.

This is why I say to build a diversified gig portfolio and an exit strategy, it is irresponsible to accept poor behavior from companies who don’t have your best interest in mind. Not to mention, you will have more opportunities to earn.

One of the exit strategies you can capitalize on is the Build Your Own Delivery Service Provider course.
