While doing my own gig work, I ended up getting an order from UberEats that caused a bit of drama for me and revealed some interesting information to me. So while I tell you guys how I almost got scammed by Uber, I will tell you more about my discovery.
So in this article, We are talking about:
How I almost got scammed on UberEats
What I discovered about UberEats Support
Everything in between!

The Order Itself
So the order was an alright order from a local gourmet coffee shop that just opened up around here, Crema gourmet espresso bar. They have been under construction for a minute now and they finally opened up.
That said, the order was for $16 something going 9 miles, not the best ratio but it is possible the tip was being hidden so it was kind of worth it. Not gonna lie, I was curious to see what the new place looked like.
Which honestly, pretty nice, trendy, no complaints to be honest.
That said, I arrived and they said I was the third one there for this order and that they never received it. This isn’t the worst outcome, I am not going to lie, I thought she was going to say something much worse.
I don’t know what the problem was with her system but I said I would call to have the order canceled.
Dealing with Support
I hopped on the phone with support and went through the chatbot, which by the way, does it seem more complex now to anyone else? Why does it feel like it takes longer to get past the chatbot these days?
Anyway, once I did get past it all I opted for the phone support because I find the text chatbots are run by people who couldn’t care less about screwing you over and don’t want it documented that they were trying to help you.
Support Can Stop Your Ratings from Getting Worse
That said, I talked to support over the phone and the first one was yapping on about claiming that this will not affect my ratings but “uber no longer provides cancellation fees.” Which we all know is bullshit but I also took a screenshot of my ratings before they canceled it.

I said over the phone that I just took a screenshot and if I find out that he is lying, it will display and they are legally liable, and not providing the cancellation fee is a violation of contract.
They fed me this line about not being able to control the system and that it is automatic, which if that was the case, why would he be able to claim it doesn’t? Oh, because he lied? That is what I thought.
Regardless, he canceled it and it didn’t affect my ratings which proves that they have more control than they let on. That is the piss poor integrity and character of the support agents on display.
Support Hates Independent Contractors
That said I still needed a supervisor because he didn’t pay me my cancellation fee. The first one tried to claim that they didn’t need to provide the fee and by the way “you’re an independent contractor, who cares” and hung up on me.
It was always speculated but this proves discrimination within the company. I received a comment on a previous video about being “quick to assume discrimination” and I have to say, that is just a gaslighting response from someone who is just trying to posture on you.
If they give you a hard time about being a gig worker or an independent contractor and choose to be abusive with you, and then it is followed up by claiming you are crazy for being discriminated against, that is abuse.
That is like catching your partner cheating on you in the act, and then gaslighting you into thinking you are crazy and obviously they were just wrestling and it just slipped in.
That said, I wasn’t giving up that easily. I was going to call them about that myself but I received a pop up.
“Have we resolved the issue”, I said no, thinking I can rate them and then call them back. Instead they gave me a “would you like to try again” and a list of options.
This is a really convenient update but also, we need to be able to rate these people. We need a place where we can report them and hold them accountable for their actions and potentially sue if necessary, and that goes for all gig companies.
That said, I called back and I explained the issue to the agent again and asked for the supervisor. Only to get the nonsense response: “well to set proper expectations…”
If they ever do this, they want you to acknowledge it just so they can be justified in giving you a harder time about not paying you your fee. I went back and forth with her until she hung up on me too.

Tried again, with the next agent who connected me to a supervisor without problem. This time was different though, I hopped on and without letting me say anything yet, he is rattling off the problem and for some reason by the tone he was giving I think this was a tactic.
If he just “answers” what he was told what the problem was without asking me or letting me speak, he can just hang up after his spiel right? I wasn’t gonna give him a chance to let him try, so I explained that this was a violation of contract and I wanted my fee and he paid me my $10.
Might Be Time to Move On
Look, I am not going to lie but I am thinking I might be a bit jaded for this industry sometimes. I know I made the point earlier about proving there is discrimination and those who are calling you crazy while doing it are just abusing you, but I can also feel myself getting triggered before even doing anything.
There are aspects of what I do that I like, but when people say you need to be built differently, they aren’t kidding. You need to basically look past their bullshit before they have a chance to do anything.
That said, I am also in the process of changing my position and building other things, so I am getting to the point where this type of gig work might soon just be in the way rather than helpful.
I find I only take orders from on-demand apps when it is convenient rather than simply when I get a good order. Trust me, there is no more frustrating feeling than declining a good order when you are not physically capable of taking it.
That said, I have that privilege because I have been developing exit strategies and diversifying my gig portfolio. Remember, the gig economy is an income bridge to what would be a long term goal, not the goal!
One of those exit strategies is to develop your own delivery service provider and which you can learn how to do in our Build Your Own Delivery Service Provider Course.
One of the things I constantly say is to treat the gig economy as an income bridge to what would be a long-term goal and not simply the goal and to develop an exit strategy like building your own delivery service provider company.
